Hanuman Chalisa — Opening Doha
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि । बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु जो दायकु फल चारि ॥ बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार । बल बुधि बिद्या देहु मोहिं हरहु कलेस बिकार ॥
Transliteration
Śrīguru charana saroja raja nija manu mukuru sudhāri, baranaũ raghubara bimala jasu jo dāyaku phala chāri. Buddhihīna tanu jānike sumirauṃ pavana-kumāra, bala budhi bidyā dehu mohiṃ harahu kalesa bikāra.
Translation
Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet, I sing the pure glory of Sri Rama, the best of the Raghus, who bestows the four fruits of life. Knowing myself to be without wit, I remember you, O son of the Wind. Grant me strength, intelligence and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and impurities.
Meaning
The opening couplets (dohas) of Tulsidas's Hanuman Chalisa, a forty-verse hymn of devotion. These lines set the prayer's intent: to ask Hanuman for strength, wisdom and relief from troubles.
