Transliteration

Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya.

Translation

Om. I bow to Shiva (the auspicious one).

Meaning

The Panchakshara — the 'five-syllable' mantra (na-mah-shi-va-ya). One of the simplest and most profound mantras, expressing surrender to the auspicious Self.

Calms the mind, deepens meditation, and is ideal for continuous mental repetition through the day.

When to Recite

Anytime as meditation or japa; especially in the morning, evening, and on Mondays and Shivaratri.
